4 Tips For How to Style a Moto Jacket

If you haven’t noticed the trend making its way down the line, moto jackets are going to be huge this Fall.  In preparation a lot of brands are launching a huge variety of moto jackets to choose from. They are the perfect amount of edginess with a figure-flattering silhouette. If you’re a newcomer to moto jackets you may find them tricky to style at first. So I’m breaking down some quick and simple tips for how to style this year’s “it” jacket.

4 Tips For How to Style a Moto Jacket | Feminine Moto Jacket Outfit

1. Go Girly

To balance the more tough style of the moto jacket, pair it with feminine pieces. Choose a lighter wash jean and wear it with a flowy tank top or something with delicate lace. In this look, I also went for suede booties, which have a softer texture as well. All these pieces are more light and airy to be paired with the bold shape and style of the jacket.

Another thing to consider is going for a lighter colored moto jacket like a light tan, blush, or cream. These are a little more subdued than the darker jackets and easier to dress down.  I am wearing XS in both tops below.

2. Toughen Up

Sometimes, doing the opposite of the above can work great with a moto jacket, too. Instead of trying to taper down the tough and rough style of the moto, embrace it. Try styling it with darker colors, like the black moto leggings I’m wearing here.  Then add in more bold accessories. I added heavier jewelry and paired it with a studded purse. These things compliment the moto jacket for a more “tough girl” look.  If you want some other ideas for styling faux leather leggings I did a post about that last year.

But, notice that to keep this outfit from being too harsh, I did still pair it with a soft, flowing tank. This helped to soften it just the right amount.

3. Go for Closet Staples

Try pairing your moto jacket with basic, closet staples. Don’t opt for anything overly detailed or fanciful. Pull out your simple, staple jeans and a basic tank or henley. This will let the moto jacket be the star of the outfit. It also helps you avoid looking like you tried to squeeze too many trends into one outfit. This is a great option for a darker or bolder jacket.  I am wearing XS in the faux suede moto jacket here and small in the white top.

4. Choose a Non-Traditional Moto

Because moto jackets are so popular now, you can get them in a lot of varieties. If a traditional moto jacket isn’t your style, try opting for something different like the linen moto jacket I have on here. This gives you the style and silhouette of the moto jacket but is a little softer. You could easily dress this up for the office, or pair it with shorts like I did for a more casual look!  I am wearing XS in this linen moto jacket and camisole.

Choosing your perfect moto jacket

Whether you want to add an edgy piece to your more feminine outfit or you’re trying to rock that “I’m with the band,” cool-girl vibe, you’re going to love the moto jacket. They are surprisingly versatile as you can tell from the look above, and definitely something I think you’ll want in your closet this fall (or, maybe a few in your closet if you’re like me!)

When choosing what moto jacket, you have to think of a few things. First, you’ll want to decide what fabric you want. Suede and leather are two of the most common. Leather is a little edgier and suede is going to feel more chic and trendy.  I have more suede jackets than leather ones for what it’s worth.   If you want to opt for something a little lighter, then look for a moto jacket made of cotton, tweed, or linen.

Next, you’ll want to decide on the right color. Again, there are some more edgy color choices, mainly darker shades like chocolate, burgandy, black, and dark grey. If you’re looking for something more feminine, consider a cream, blush, or tan, which will soften the look of the jacket.  I’ll be sharing a cute blush option on the blog later this month!

Lastly, you’ll want to look at the detail. Some moto jackets are made with simple fabrics and siloutettes while others have a lot of added details like buckles, grommets, studs, and pockets. These details can make the piece more of a statement, but can also look busy depending on how you style it. If you usually wear more minimal pieces, you might want to opt for a more minimal jacket.

Love this advice!! I just bought a black moto jacket from the Anniversary Sale and have been struggling with how I will make it look like “me” this fall. It has a lot of metal hardware on it and is black so it feels pretty masculine. I’m totally thinking I’ll take your advice of wearing it with something more feminine and simple. I definitely think that adding some girly touches will help! Great tips! 🙂
