It’ s hard to believe that swimsuit season is right around the corner but it is! I’m not a beach bum by any means (my spray tan machine would miss me), but as the mom of two young boys, I always like to have a few good swimsuits I know look good ready to go for day trips to the water or the occasional poolside visit. But, I’m also a woman in her mid-30’s and know that the thought of swimsuit shopping can send most of us into a mild panic – I liken it to the scream emoji face ????. So, today I’m excited to partner with Macy’s to share some tips to finding the PERFECT swimsuit so you can shop for a bathing suit with more confidence and less panic.
Macy’s is the perfect spot for bathing suit shopping because they have endless styles and variety to choose from. There really is something for everyone.
Focus on Your Assets:
Instead of stressing over the parts of your body you’re self-conscious about, focus on what you LOVE about your body. Do you have great legs? Or an awesome bust? Curvy hips? Focus on your assets and look to find a bathing suit that compliments that.
Color Vs. Pattern?
There are endless patterns and colors to choose from when it comes to bathing suit shopping. It can be overwhelming. In general, bright colors and bright patterns will draw attention, so use those in areas you want to highlight. Darker, solid colors tend to help take attention away from areas. You can use texture to your advantage, too. I find that ruffles on a bathing suit can help add volume (like for my fellow small-chested ladies it can help fill you in there if you know what I mean). Knowing these rules, don’t be afraid to mix and match your tops and bottoms.
Look for the Details:
The proper details in a bathing suit can make or break it. I’m talking about things like extra lining (to avoid being see-through), padding for chest, adjustable straps, and even coverage where you need it. Cheeky suits are cute – but I don’t care to share my bum dimples with fellow beach goers.
The #1 most important thing about a bathing suit is that you feel comfortable. Ensure you suit fits well, stays on, and won’t lead to any embarrassing swimsuit stories down the road.
When I got this high neck Becca bathing suit, I loved that it not only had soft cups but was built with adjustable straps so it to fit my tall frame. Because I am 5’11” I need a bathing suit that can be adjusted for a longer torso – and this one did just that!
Try Multiple Styles:
Bathing suits come in literally every cut imaginable nowadays. Even if you’ve always stuck to one style, consider grabbing some less conventional cuts and trying them out. You might be surprised how much more confident you feel in one style as opposed to another. This high-neck swimsuit I’m wearing by Becca from Macy’s isn’t something I would initially gravitate to, but I was surprised by how figure flattering the details made it. My décolletage is showing it’s age, partly due to sun exposure, so this suit keeps that area well covered. I am wearing size small in the Becca swimsuit for reference.
Macy’s has TONS of variety when it comes to different selects, styles, and silhouettes of bathing suits. Not to mentions tons of color and pattern options. It’s a great one-stop-shop to try all different styles, cuts, and colors, to find one that you feel comfortable and confident in. I’m really digging the one shoulder bathing suits and I found this tummy control swimsuit option that looks so flattering!
Have Some Fun and Don’t Take Yourself Too Seriously!
We are all our hardest critics – especially in the fitting room when buying swimsuits. Don’t over-analyze yourself and don’t focus on all the little things you usually critique your body for. Give yourself some grace. Try on bathing suits in fun colors and different styles. Be willing to try something unconventional. Try to make bathing suit shopping a process of self-love instead of self-critique. Your body does amazing things for you – dress it well!
