Fashion and Function: Tops to Wear Before, During, and After Nursing

nursing crossover sweater with white denim and over the knee boots

nursing crossover sweater with white denim and over the knee bootsWhen I posted this outfit to Instagram so many people commented what a great nursing top this gray cross over sweater would be.  For some reason I hadn’t even thought of that, even though I am still nursing.   Finding something cute to where when you’re in the thick of breastfeeding is tricky.   I remember when I returned to work there were several months where I only wore button down tops.

When I quit nursing my first son at 12 months I regretted giving it up when it had finally gotten easier.   The first 5 months of nursing him were grueling for so many reasons.  It gradually got easier and then I suddenly cut him off.   I felt sad afterwards so here I am still nursing my second son, now 18 months, and I’ll probably continue another 27 years or so.   That way I can keep crazy girlfriends and treadmills out of my life for the next 3 decades. ;).  I definitely get a lot of weird looks though when people find out I am still nursing.

At this point nursing is easy for me.  My nursing bras are tattered and ragged.   Before I had kids I was guilty of washing my bras every couple weeks (yuck), so I didn’t realize how much the washing machine chews apart a bra.   Nursing bras, stinky with sweat and milk leakage, need to be washed frequently.  None of the nursing bras I have are still available but I’ll link some similar to those I still have kicking around.  Mine were mostly from Target and there were pros and cons to all of them.  Generally I liked the “sleep bras” (though no one warned me you will wear a bra 24/7 outside the shower for the first 7 months) for lounging around.

Anyway, those of you who haven’t breastfed are probably like “shut up about your boobs”.   So here is the sweater.  With or without the need to repeatedly expose your boobs – it’s a great sweater.   I am wearing the smaller of the two sizes (small/medium).

winter outfit: nursing crossover sweater with white skinny cords and Sorel leather snow boots

You’d want to wear something under this sweater because it drapes quite a bit in the front.  I was wearing a nursing tank top.  My boobs are so small I don’t even need the support of an underwire bra these days (insert sobbing emoji’s here).

My Free People fringe scarf is expensive ($48) and has been in and out of stock in this color.  It’s thick and soft, worth the price tag in my opinion, but you can find a more affordable dupe here.  My Gigi New York crossbody bag is monogrammed with my initials and is such a great neutral color called “stone”.  I’m wearing very affordable white skinny cords with this outfit because almost all my wardrobe’s white is low end thanks to my 2 toddler boys.

I am wearing my new Sorel waterproof knee high block heeled boots.   They combine fashion and function.   I was starting to feel like I live in over the knee boots so this is a great change and it’s a grayish brown so the color gives you lot of options.  Plus they battle the elements, which isn’t the case for my favorite over the knee boots.

I am linking up so great nursing options in tops, tanks, and bras.   Read the reviews because, again, I can only link similar items to the ones I still have that are now over 4 years old.

Do you have any styling tips for nursing mamas?  It’s a tough time to feel confident with your body when it is changing so much, so quickly.
