Low Calorie Spicy Margarita

Tomorrow is cinco de mayo and I’m thinking ahead (as in I dragged my kids to Whole Foods at 8 am to purchase lemons, limes, and a jalapeño).  I love a spicy cocktail.  It’s about the only thing that keeps me from consuming the whole drink in 5 minutes.   I add seltzer to this margarita because bubbles give the bite!  A little fizz gives a better buzz.    The seltzer also saves some calories over adding simple syrup (i.e.: sugar water).

If you’re wondering why I’m serving this in a mug it’s because happy hour at my house is enjoyed in the yard with toddlers.  I don’t want people to get the wrong idea about me – so drinking out of a mug leaves me out of the scrutiny of others.   And really – I normally don’t drink margaritas at 5 pm.   I save my cocktail for when my kids are in bed and I can really relax – but 5/5 is a special occasion!

I have a small kitchen so I do not own a mortar and pestle.   I used a small glass to grind the jalapeño at the bottom of my glass.   Jalapeños vary a lot in heat.   I used a little and this happened to be a VERY hot one.   I had a built in lip plumper.  If you like a sweet drink you can add a little agave or maple syrup at the expense of a few calories.
