Summer Capsule Wardrobe

I got so much great feedback from my Spring Capsule Wardrobe I knew I wanted to put together a summer one! Summer style is always so fun because it’s more easy and breezy. What’s your favorite season to dress for?

What’s a Capsule Wardrobe?

If before we get into this you’re like…wait a minute Rachel, what’s a capsule wardrobe? Let me explain. The idea of a capsule wardrobe is to group versatile, basic wardrobe pieces that can be restyled in many outfit combinations. The goal is to have a wardrobe of items that are flexible and can be worn tons of different ways for a single season. I try to pick a good range of pieces as well as ones that are fairly budget-friendly. But, it’s also about filling your closet with high-quality, timeless pieces that will work for years.

For this capsule wardrobe I stuck to my normal nuetrals since they are flexible and can be worn tons of ways and with many pieces. I also brought in a little blush pink which has been popular for a few seasons now and flattering on all skin tones. Depending on the shoes and accessories you style with each piece, you can take most of these from day to night in a snap.

Let’s start with tops. My first pick was the Gibson Tab Sleeve Knot Waist Top because it’s so versatile. A simple t-shirt can be styled a million ways, and I love the knotted detail on this one (super figure flattering!) Another t-shirt pick was this striped tee from Madewell, I love stripes in the summer.

For tank tops, I had to include this scalloped cami because I’ve gotten so much wear out of mine already. I also had to include a staple go-to tank that can be used for layering or worn alone. This one is made of a thicker material so it looks and feels higher quality and will last you for many seasons.

Lastly, even summer needs a go-to cardigan and you probably know I adore my long linen cardigan. It’s super versatile and the perfect piece for summer nights.

Bottoms and Dresses

Moving on to bottoms and dresses. Every summer wardrobe needs the perfect pair of jean shorts. I like high-waisted shorts because they help tuck everything in (if you know what I mean!) I also can’t get enough of high-waisted utility shorts, so I had to include one of my favorite pairs. (You might also like reading my tips for styling high-waisted utility shorts.)

For dresses, I kept it pretty simple, remember it’s all about flexibility! A jersey maxi dress is a MUST-HAVE item in the summer. They aren’t just insanely comfortable but so easy to dress up or dress down. Then, to bring in a blush-toned option I opted for this crepe dress which is super figure-flattering.

Alright, I’m keeping it EXTRA simple with shoes and highlighting just three gotta-have-ems. The first is a casual sneaker, I picked the Converse Chucks which can be worn a million ways. For a sandal option, these Sam Edelmen slide sandals are a go-to because they are chic and comfortable. And, of course, we need a chunky wedge to wear for any nights out or to dress up your shorts or jeans.

Last but not least, we need to accessorize. I don’t like to overdo it with accessories. Not only can it weigh down an outfit, but having too many accessories in your closet can quickly feel like clutter, so I stick to the basics.

I’m picking just one option for a bag, this Raffia Tote. It has the same look and feel of the popular straw circle bags but in a more versatile tote style. For sunglasses, a classic pair of aviators is perfect for summer outfits. I also wanted to include a hat option. Hats are a great accessory because they can not only change the look of an outfit but also cover up a bad hair day. While I love a good baseball cap, I thought this Panama Hat would be a great stylish option for this capsule wardrobe.

For jewelry, I highlighted two picks. The first are these pom-pom hoop earrings which aren’t overstated but just enough to add some sass to any outfit. And, a set of gold bangles which can be worn with jean shorts as easily as dressed up for a wedding or special event.

What are some of your must-have pieces for the summer? Which outfit from my Summer Capsule Wardrobe do you like the most?

Thanks so much for this AMAZING capsule post!! I find myself buying way too many random items, overspending (which I really can’t afford to do) and in the end not having anything to really put together!
    What a mess…
I have quite a few pieces you have featured here and now a great starting point for my Summer Wardrobe!
Thanks for always keeping it real 😊
