I’m a little late sharing my winter capsule wardrobe, but seeing as it was a brisk 1 degree out earlier this week, I think we still have a lot of cold weather outfits ahead of us. So, here’s my winter capsule wardrobe for 2019.
Really quickly, in case you don’t know, let me explain the idea behind a capsule wardrobe. The idea of a capsule wardrobe is to group versatile, basic wardrobe pieces that can be restyled in many outfit combinations. The goal is to have a wardrobe of items that are flexible and can be worn a variety of different ways for a single season. I always try to pick a good range of pieces and of course ones that are fairly budget-friendly. I rarely invest in wardrobe pieces, but basics are somewhere I will throw in a little extra money. Many of these pieces are things I wear throughout the year, so I want them to hold up well to wash and wear.
Winter Capsule Wardrobe Tops
It’s no surprise that I love my neutrals, but winter whites are always a classic look and so easy to wear a ton of different ways. I focus on light colors in a variety of styles and fabrics. Obviously a basic long sleeve white top is key in a wardrobe because it is such amazing layering piece for under cardigans, sweater vests, and jackets. I also included my favorite convertible cowl neck sweater (that can also be worn off the shoulder!). Tops that can be styled multiple ways are perfect capsule pieces because of their versatility. A nice henley style blouse is also a staple piece because it can be worn for work or play.
Winter Capsule Wardrobe Bottoms
For bottoms I wanted to keep it super simple. A staple pair of skinny jeans is always a must in the winter. I went for this distressed jean because it’s maybe a little different than some jeans you might already have in your closet. I also like to keep my style extra casual in the cold months.
Two things I can’t get enough of this winter are camo and joggers, so a pair of camo joggers are perfect to add to this capsule. I find them very versatile because you can wear them around the home, or style them with a pullover fleece or long sleeve for going out. Lastly, you have to have a killer pair of leggings in your wardrobe in the winter and I opted for the Zella leggings which are honestly so worth the slightly higher price tag for leggings. They are amazing quality, will last forever, and give you great belly support.
Winter Capsule Wardrobe Outwear
I wanted to keep it simple for outerwear, too. It can be easy to overdo it in the outerwear department and then have an overflowing closet (I know first hand), so I’m focusing on three staples. Obviously, you need something warm and reliable so I chose this North Face Parka that will go with everything. I think the white keeps is chic and timeless. Next, a moto jacket like this suede one is a great jacket because it’s a little more trendy. And, of course, a versatile cardigan will be a life-saver for layering.
Winter Capsule Wardrobe Shoes and Accessories
With winter shoes, you can really focus on four key pieces: a winter (waterproof) boot, a sneaker, a tall boot and something trendy. Sorel winter boots are amazing for the cold and the snow and are amazing quality. Next, a simple white sneaker will go with so many things, I love the Adidas Superstar sneakers. They are perfect for throwing on and running out the door. For something trendy I’m loving the wedge sneaker look. They have the feel of a bootie but are a little more casual making them so easy to wear with tons of different things. And, of course, a classic suede over-the-knee boot (size up if between) is a winter must.
In the accessory department, you need at least one good beanie, I like this pompom blush pink one since it matches with the colors I usually wear. Often in the winter, I gravitate towards slightly larger leather totes since I can carry a little more in them (great for throwing in your mittens, hats, etc.), but if you want to opt for something smaller this adorable crossbody is only $23 from Target and great for winter.
The beautiful thing about the capsule wardrobe is how easily everything interchanges. You can mix and match almost all the tops with the bottoms and shoes and vice versa to get endless outfit ideas and combinations. Thank so much for stopping by! I’d love to hear from you. What’s your one must-have item for winter?
